What Every Musician Needs to Know About the Body

Here is the outline for the six hour course.

Hour 1: Training our senses, movement and attention

  •    The SIX senses will be trained, visual, auditory, tactile, olfactory, gustatory with the sixth being the kinesthetic sense.
  •    Movement will be trained by correcting and perfecting students' body maps, because this the most efficient,  effective way to do it.
  •    Attention will be trained, both introspective and extrospective and finally, inclusive, self perceiving - world perceiving attention.

Hour 2: The six places of balance in the body

  •   Dynamic balance is the optimal balance we strive for to achieve integrated whole body movement.
  •    Students will learn the six places of balance and how to use those six places for standing and sitting balance.
  •    Dynamic balance promotes facility, tone quality and ease of breathing.

Hour 3: The arm structure and movement at all 4 joints

  •     An easy neutral for the arm structure in relationship to the whole body will be trained.
  •      Spinal support for the whole arm structure will be trained.
  •     Easy and free arm movement will be trained by accurately mapping all 4 main arm joints.
  •     Easy and free hand movement will be trained by accurately mapping the thumb and finger joints.
  •     Integration of arms for ease of whole body movement will be trained by mapping the whole arm in relation to the whole body.

Hour 4: The movement of breathing

  • Breathing for music making can be free, coordinated and effortless.
  • What happens inside our bodies with every breath? Many misconceptions about breathing can be cleared up with Body Mapping.
  • Coordinated breathing will lead to improved whole body integration.

Hour 5: The legs; how they move, and the balance they provide.

  • The three leg joints;
  • The organization of the musculature;
  • The support for leg movement by a dynamic, lengthening and gathering core;
  • The reflex that gives us a spring in the step.

Hour 6: Putting it all together with our instruments

  •  A chance to have practical application with instruments in hand.
